Android Tablet vs iPad: Honest Comparison
Android Tablet vs iPad: Honest Comparison
Neither platform is better for everyone. Apple’s iPads have the deepest library of tablet-specific apps and the tightest integration with iPhones and Macs. Android tablets offer more choice of sizes and prices, more freedom to customize, and, on Samsung’s models, a pen in the box and a desktop mode. The right choice depends on the phone you already own, your budget and what you plan to do with the tablet.
This comparison uses the manufacturers’ published specifications, current US list prices (October 2026) and published reviews, which are credited where they are used. Prices are approximate and change often.
Current Lineups and Prices
Apple sells four iPad lines and raised its US prices in 2026. Tom’s Guide notes that many Android tablets are now cheaper than iPads “ever since Apple’s price hikes earlier this year.”
| Price range | Android examples | iPad examples |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Galaxy Tab A11+, 11-inch: $299.99 | iPad (A16), 11-inch: $449 |
| Mid-range | Galaxy Tab S10 FE, 10.9-inch: $549.99 | iPad mini (A17 Pro), 8.3-inch: $599; iPad Air (M4), 11-inch: $749 |
| Upper mid-range | OnePlus Pad 3, 13.2-inch: $699.99 | iPad Air (M4), 13-inch: $949 |
| Premium | Galaxy Tab S11, 11-inch: $999.99 | iPad Pro (M5), 11-inch: $1,199 |
| Large premium | Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra, 14.6-inch: $1,299.99 | iPad Pro (M5), 13-inch: $1,499 |
Prices are the lowest Wi-Fi configurations on the Apple, Samsung and OnePlus US stores. Base storage differs: the cheapest iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini, Galaxy Tab S11 and Tab S10 FE come with 128GB, while the iPad Pro and Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra start at 256GB. Below the $449 iPad there is no new Apple tablet, while Android has many cheaper tablets; our guide to the best tablets under $200 covers some of them.
Performance
The iPad Air and iPad Pro use Apple’s M4 and M5 chips, the same family of processors Apple uses in its Mac computers, and the iPad mini uses the A17 Pro. On the Android side, flagship tablets use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite (OnePlus Pad 3) or MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ (Galaxy Tab S11 series) and Dimensity 9500 (Galaxy Tab S12 series).
For everyday tasks such as streaming, browsing, video calls, notes and documents, both platforms are more than fast enough at the mid-range and above. In Tom’s Guide’s words, Android tablets “can power through apps and games without breaking a sweat.” Raw speed matters most for professional creative work, and there the bigger difference is software: Apple’s own Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro have iPad versions but no Android versions. Our tablet buying guide explains processor tiers.
Display
Apple’s iPad Pro specifications list a tandem OLED panel with ProMotion refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz and 1,000 nits of maximum SDR brightness. The iPad, iPad mini and iPad Air use Liquid Retina LCDs without ProMotion; the 11-inch iPad and iPad Air both have a 2,360 x 1,640 resolution and are rated at 500 nits.
That creates a clear value difference. If you want a 120Hz OLED screen on an iPad, the cheapest option is the $1,199 iPad Pro. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S11, with an 11-inch 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, lists for $999.99 and is often discounted. Even budget Android tablets have faster screens than the base iPad: the $299.99 Galaxy Tab A11+ and the $549.99 Tab S10 FE run at 90Hz, and the OnePlus Pad 3’s LCD reaches 144Hz in supported apps.
Android also offers more sizes. iPads come in 8.3, 11 and 13 inches. Android tablets run from compact models such as the 8.7-inch Galaxy Tab A11 and 9.06-inch RedMagic Astra 2 to the 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra and Tab S12 Ultra.
Software and Apps
Where the iPad Leads
Creative apps. Procreate, one of the most popular drawing apps, is made for iPad and has no Android version. Along with Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, it gives artists, video editors and musicians a set of tools Android can’t fully match. Android has strong alternatives, such as Clip Studio Paint; see our best drawing apps for Android.
Tablet layouts. Developers have long put effort into iPad-specific layouts. Some Android apps still show a stretched phone layout on a large screen, so check that the apps you rely on work well on an Android tablet before you switch.
Multitasking. iPadOS now has a windowed mode as well: Apple’s iPadOS 27 page describes tiling apps side by side with Windowed Apps turned on.
Where Android Leads
Customization. Android lets you replace the entire home screen with a third-party launcher, choose default apps and place widgets freely. It also lets you install apps from sources other than Google Play, while iPadOS limits installs to Apple’s App Store in most countries.
Multiple users. Android supports separate user profiles, each with its own home screen, accounts, apps and settings, according to Google’s Android Help. On an iPad, Shared iPad requires a device-management service and Managed Apple Accounts issued by an organization, so it is for schools and businesses rather than families.
Samsung DeX. On supported Galaxy tablets, Samsung DeX provides a desktop-style workspace and can extend it to an external Smart monitor. Our productivity setup guide covers how to use it.
Files. Both platforms work with USB-C drives, but Android file managers have broader access to the tablet’s storage, which suits people who move many files between apps. See our file management guide.
Ecosystem Integration
Apple
If you own an iPhone or a Mac, the iPad fits in neatly. Apple’s Continuity features include AirDrop for sending files between Apple devices, Handoff for continuing a task on another device, and Universal Clipboard for copying on one device and pasting on another.
Android and Samsung
Android has its own equivalents, though they are more fragmented. Quick Share, formerly Nearby Share, sends files to nearby Android devices and Chromebooks, and to Windows PCs through Google’s Quick Share for Windows app. Samsung’s Continue apps on other devices lets you pick up a page in Samsung Internet or a note in Samsung Notes on another Galaxy device signed in to the same Samsung account and Wi-Fi network.
If you already own several Apple devices, switching to Android means giving up these conveniences. If you use an Android phone, especially a Galaxy, an Android tablet is the more natural fit. If you are starting fresh, decide on features and price.
Stylus and Keyboards
Samsung includes the S Pen with the Galaxy Tab S11, according to Android Central, and with the Tab S10 FE series, according to Samsung. Apple sells its pens separately: the Apple Pencil (USB-C) costs $79 and the Apple Pencil Pro $129 on Apple’s US store, and which one works depends on the model. The iPad (A16) supports the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the first-generation Pencil, while the iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad mini support the Apple Pencil Pro as well as the USB-C model.
Keyboards add more. Apple’s US store lists the Magic Keyboard Folio for the iPad (A16) at $249, the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air at $269 (11-inch) or $319 (13-inch), and the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro at $299 (11-inch) or $349 (13-inch). Samsung sells Book Cover Keyboard cases for its Tab S models, and OnePlus sells a Smart Keyboard for the Pad 3. Any Bluetooth keyboard works on either platform. Our keyboard cases guide and best tablet accessories 2026 cover more options.
Software Support
Samsung promises seven Android upgrades and seven years of security updates for its Galaxy Tab S10, Tab S11 and Tab S12 series, according to SamMobile. Google guarantees Pixel Tablet updates until June 2028 on its support page. Policies at other Android brands vary by model and region; Tech Advisor reports, for example, that the RedMagic Astra gets three years of support in the US.
Apple’s support is best judged by which models each new iPadOS release supports. According to Apple, iPadOS 27 runs on iPad Pro and iPad Air models going back to the fourth generation, released in 2020. For Android, the OS update guide lists each brand’s policy.
