Android Tablet FAQ: 50 Questions Answered
Android Tablet FAQ: 50 Questions Answered
This FAQ answers the questions people most often ask before and after buying an Android tablet, from what to buy to how to update, secure and look after it. Where an answer depends on a fact that changes, such as a price or an update policy, we link to the manufacturer’s page or a published review. Prices are US list prices from manufacturer stores in October 2026; they are approximate and change often.
Buying Decisions
1. What is the best Android tablet in 2026? It depends on your budget. Android Central’s top overall pick is the OnePlus Pad 3 ($699.99 at OnePlus), and Tom’s Guide’s is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ ($699.99 at Samsung). Samsung’s newest flagships, the Galaxy Tab S12+ and Tab S12 Ultra, went on sale in October 2026. Our best Android tablets 2026 guide covers picks by budget and use case.
2. How much should I spend on an Android tablet? For streaming, browsing and schoolwork, a budget model such as the $299.99 Galaxy Tab A11+ is enough. Around $550 to $700 you get an included pen and water resistance (Galaxy Tab S10 FE) or flagship speed (OnePlus Pad 3). Samsung’s AMOLED flagships start at $999.99, though retailers often discount them. Our tablet cost guide looks at what each tier costs.
3. Is an Android tablet better than an iPad? Neither is better for everyone. Android offers more prices and sizes, more customization, multiple user profiles and, on Samsung, a pen in the box. The iPad has more tablet-optimized and creative apps, such as Procreate. Our Android vs iPad comparison covers the details.
4. Do Android tablets get viruses? Malware exists on Android, so install apps from Google Play and keep the tablet updated. According to Google, Google Play Protect checks your apps and device for harmful behavior, including apps from other sources, warns you about them and may deactivate or remove them.
5. How long will an Android tablet be supported? That depends on the manufacturer’s update promise. Samsung promises seven Android upgrades and seven years of security updates for its Galaxy Tab S10, Tab S11 and Tab S12 series, according to SamMobile. Google guarantees Pixel Tablet updates until June 2028. Other brands promise less or vary by region; Tech Advisor reports three years of support in the US for the RedMagic Astra. Our OS update guide lists each brand’s policy.
6. Can an Android tablet replace a laptop? For documents, email, browsing and video calls, it can, especially with a keyboard and Samsung DeX. For desktop-only software or development tools, you still need a laptop. Our productivity setup guide covers the work setup.
7. Do Android tablets have expandable storage? Many do. According to GSMArena, Samsung’s current lineup, including the Galaxy Tab A11, Tab A11+, Tab S10 FE, Tab S11 and Tab S12 series, keeps a microSD slot. Not every brand includes one, so check the spec sheet.
8. What screen size should I get? About 11 inches suits most people and is easy to carry. Smaller models, such as the 8.7-inch Galaxy Tab A11 or 9.06-inch RedMagic Astra 2, are easier to hold for reading and gaming. Screens of 12 to 14.6 inches are better for side-by-side apps and drawing but are heavier. Our buying guide explains the trade-offs.
9. Should I buy the cheapest tablet I can find? Be careful. Very cheap tablets tend to have slow chips, little memory and storage, and short or unclear update support. Before buying, check the RAM, the storage and, above all, how long the manufacturer promises updates.
10. Are refurbished tablets worth buying? They can be, if you buy from the manufacturer or a reputable retailer with a clear warranty and return policy. Check how many years of updates the model has left, because a discounted tablet near the end of its support is less of a bargain.
Display and Hardware
11. What is the difference between AMOLED and LCD? In an AMOLED (OLED) screen, each pixel produces its own light, so blacks are truly black. An LCD uses a backlight, so blacks look dark gray. Among current models, Samsung’s AMOLED tablets start with the $999.99 Galaxy Tab S11, and the RedMagic Astra 2 has an OLED screen from $699; most budget and mid-range tablets use LCDs. Our display technology guide goes deeper.
12. Does refresh rate matter? Yes. A 90Hz or 120Hz screen makes scrolling and pen strokes look smoother than 60Hz, and gaming tablets go higher: the Astra 2 runs at 185Hz. Higher rates use more battery, though.
13. How much RAM do I need? For browsing and streaming, the 6GB in the base Galaxy Tab A11+ is enough. For everyday split-screen multitasking, aim for 8GB or more. The Galaxy Tab S11 has 12GB.
14. What processor should I look for? Flagship chips include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite (OnePlus Pad 3) and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (RedMagic Astra 2), and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ (Galaxy Tab S11) and Dimensity 9500 (Galaxy Tab S12). Samsung’s Exynos 1580 (Tab S10 FE) is a common mid-range chip, and budget tablets use chips such as MediaTek’s Helio G99.
15. Does screen resolution matter? It matters relative to screen size. A 1,920 x 1,200 screen is fine on an 11-inch tablet for video, while higher resolutions, such as the Galaxy Tab S11’s 2,560 x 1,600, make small text look sharper.
Software and Apps
16. Do Android tablets run all Android phone apps? Almost all of them, but some still show a stretched phone layout on a large screen rather than a tablet design. Check the apps you rely on most.
17. Can I use the Google Play Store? On most Android tablets, yes. Amazon’s Fire tablets are the main exception: they run Amazon’s Fire OS and use the Amazon Appstore instead of Google Play.
18. What is Samsung DeX? DeX is Samsung’s desktop-style mode for Galaxy tablets. According to Samsung, the current version supports up to four workspaces with up to five apps open in each and can extend to an external Smart monitor. Our DeX guide covers setup.
19. How do I update my Android tablet? On most Android tablets, Google’s instructions are to open Settings and tap System > Software updates. On a Samsung tablet, Samsung says to open Settings and tap Software update. Most security updates install automatically.
20. Can I use Microsoft Office on an Android tablet? Yes. Microsoft’s apps are on Google Play, and Microsoft says all plans let you view documents. Editing depends on screen size: without a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan, editing is limited to screens of 10.1 inches or smaller, so most 11-inch and larger tablets need a qualifying plan to edit.
Stylus and Creativity
21. Which Android tablets come with a stylus? Samsung includes the S Pen with the Galaxy Tab S11, according to Android Central, and with the Tab S10 FE series, according to Samsung. Other brands often sell pens separately; OnePlus sells the Stylo 2 for the Pad 3. Budget tablets usually work only with basic capacitive styluses.
22. Is the S Pen as good as the Apple Pencil? Both work well for handwriting and sketching. The bigger differences are cost and apps: the S Pen comes in the box with many Samsung tablets, while Apple charges $79 for the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and $129 for the Apple Pencil Pro, and Procreate is available only on iPad.
23. What are the best drawing apps for Android tablets? Popular choices on Google Play include Clip Studio Paint, Infinite Painter, Sketchbook and Krita. See our best drawing apps guide.
24. Can I take handwritten notes on an Android tablet? Yes, with a stylus. Samsung Notes works with the S Pen, and MyScript Notes (formerly Nebo) converts handwriting, math and diagrams into typed text and shapes.
25. Does palm rejection work? With an active pen such as the S Pen, the tablet can tell your pen from your hand, so you can rest your palm on the screen. Basic capacitive styluses work like a fingertip and are less reliable.
Connectivity and Accessories
26. Can I make phone calls on an Android tablet? Cellular tablets with a calling plan can. Wi-Fi-only tablets can make calls over the internet with apps such as Google Voice, WhatsApp or Zoom.
27. Do Android tablets work with keyboards? Yes. Any Bluetooth keyboard works, and Samsung and OnePlus sell keyboard covers for their tablets. Our keyboard cases guide compares options.
28. Can I connect a tablet to a TV or monitor? Often, but not always: not every tablet outputs video over USB-C, so check the spec sheet. Samsung tablets can mirror to a TV wirelessly with Smart View from Quick settings, with the TV on the same Wi-Fi network, according to Samsung, and DeX can use an external monitor.
29. Can I use USB drives? Most current tablets support USB On-The-Go, so you can connect flash drives, SSDs and card readers to the USB-C port, with an adapter if needed. Our file management guide covers how to move files.
30. Can I use a mouse? Yes. Bluetooth and USB mice work, and Android shows a pointer. Samsung tablets have mouse and trackpad settings under Settings > General management.
Battery and Charging
31. How long does an Android tablet battery last? It varies widely. In Tom’s Guide’s battery test, the Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ lasted 15 hours and 43 minutes and the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra 12 hours and 13 minutes, while the Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 lasted 16 hours at 60Hz but 13 hours and 39 minutes at 120Hz. Brightness, refresh rate and what you do all matter.
32. Can I charge a tablet with a phone charger? Usually, if it is USB-C, but a low-wattage charger will be slow. Google recommends the adapter that came with the device, and some tablets ship without one, so check which charger and wattage the manufacturer recommends.
33. Does fast charging damage the battery? Heat is the bigger concern. Google warns that a battery drains faster when it is hot and advises avoiding overheating, especially when the battery is full. Use the manufacturer’s recommended charger and avoid charging in hot places.
34. Should I drain the battery completely before charging? No. Google says you don’t need to run the battery from full to empty, though it recommends occasionally letting it drop below 10% and then charging fully overnight. On Galaxy tablets, Samsung’s Battery protection settings can stop charging early to extend battery life. Our battery life guide explains the options.
35. How long does it take to charge a tablet? Large batteries take a while. GSMArena lists the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra’s 11,600mAh battery as reaching 100% in 95 minutes at 45W. Smaller batteries and faster chargers take less time.
Usage and Features
36. Are Android tablets good for school? Yes. Note-taking, textbooks, research, lectures and document editing all work well, especially with a pen and a keyboard. See our college student guide.
37. Are Android tablets good for reading? Yes. Kindle, Google Play Books, Libby and Moon+ Reader all run on Android tablets, and a tablet shows comics and magazines in color. A dedicated E Ink reader is still better for long text-only sessions and battery life. Our e-reader guide covers apps and settings.
38. Are Android tablets good for gaming? Yes. Mid-range and premium tablets run most games well, and gaming tablets such as the RedMagic Astra 2 add very high refresh rates and active cooling. See our RedMagic Astra review and best tablets for gaming.
39. Can several people share one tablet? Yes. Android supports separate user profiles, each with its own home screen, accounts, apps and settings, according to Google. The iPad’s equivalent, Shared iPad, is only for organizations that manage their devices.
40. Can I use an Android tablet for video calls? Yes. Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams all have Android apps. You can’t start a FaceTime call from Android, but you can join one from a link in Chrome or Edge, according to Apple.
Setup and Troubleshooting
41. How do I set up a new Android tablet? Connect to Wi-Fi, sign in with your Google Account, copy data from an old device or start fresh, set a screen lock and arrange your home screen. Our setup guide walks through each step.
42. How do I transfer data from my old tablet? During setup, you can copy apps and data from an old Android device with a cable or wirelessly. According to Google, you need an internet connection, the transfer can be done only once, and it is best done during setup because the option may not be available afterwards. Samsung devices can also use Samsung Smart Switch.
43. My tablet is slow. What should I do? Restart it, install pending updates, close apps you aren’t using, and free up storage. If problems continue, back up your data before trying a factory reset. Our troubleshooting guide covers common fixes.
44. How do I take a screenshot? Press the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time, according to Google’s Android Help. Some manufacturers add other methods, so check your tablet’s help pages.
45. Can I use two apps side by side? Yes. On a Pixel Tablet, Google’s help describes dragging an app from the taskbar to one side of the screen, or tapping an app’s icon in Overview and choosing Split; you can also save app pairs. Samsung tablets have their own multi-window options; see our multitasking guide.
Security and Privacy
46. How do I keep my tablet secure? Set a PIN, password or biometric lock, keep the software updated, install apps from Google Play, and make sure Find Hub (formerly Find My Device) is on. Google says Find Hub is turned on automatically when you add a Google Account and lets you locate, secure or erase a lost device. Our security and privacy guide covers more settings.
47. Can I use a VPN on an Android tablet? Yes. Major VPN services, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark, offer Android apps that work on tablets.
48. Do I need an antivirus app? For most people, no. Google Play Protect is built in and checks your apps for harmful behavior. Third-party security apps add features, but careful app installation and regular updates matter more.
49. How do I set up parental controls? Use Google Family Link to manage a child’s apps, screen time, content filters and purchases. Our parental controls guide walks through setup.
50. Is my Android tablet encrypted? Almost certainly, if it is recent. Google’s Android security documentation says full-disk encryption isn’t allowed on new devices running Android 10 and later, which use file-based encryption instead. Setting a PIN, pattern or password is what keeps that data protected.
